The Freundeskreis Kunsthaus Dresden e. V. accompanies and supports the presentation, discussion and mediation of contemporary art at the Kunsthaus Dresden. The Freundeskreis sees itself as a source of inspiration for a dialogue that relates contemporary art to cultural, social and political developments. The members come from very different professional backgrounds. They share a special interest in strengthening contemporary art in the city.
In addition to organising events on the themes of current exhibitions, the circle of friends sees its own focus of work in the fields of contemporary art and architecture, urban planning and cultural policy. We organise trips to supra-regional art events, such as the berlinbiennale or the documenta. Galleries, institutions and companies are visited in an informal setting. The circle of friends organises special guided tours of the Kunsthaus exhibitions and brings art lovers together with the artists and curators.
The organisation supports the work of the Kunsthaus in cooperation with funding bodies and initiates projects related to art, architecture and urban planning in collaboration with the management of the Kunsthaus. In 2014, the Friends of the Kunsthaus initiated the exhibition »Demotape« by Markus Draper at the Kunsthaus Dresden, sponsored by the Saxon State Government with funds from the Free State of Saxony as part of the commemoration of the peaceful revolution in 1989, and organised an artist talk on images of history and a film evening.
As part of the Goethe-Institut Sweden's Excellence Project and the exhibition »Kirunatopia. Art on Landscape and Resources in Northern Sweden and Lusatia« at the Kunsthaus Dresden in 2015, the Freundeskreis supported a contribution to the exhibition with LAKOMA – Archive of Lusatia: Material on Coal, Landscape and Opposition (compiled by Torsten Birne and Claudia Reichardt) and was actively involved in its development and the organisation of events in this context.
In 2015, the Freundeskreis was actively involved in the development and realisation of the exhibition »Ortstermin mit Leonie Wirth. Models and designs from Leoni Wirth's studio and contemporary positions on abstraction and modernism«, which was sponsored by the Dresden Foundation for Art & Culture of the Ostsächsische Sparkasse Dresden and shown at the Kunsthaus in autumn 2015. The 2017 publication »Leoni Wirth. Playing with the Elements«, published in 2017, was the first scholarly exploration of the work of Dresden artist Leoni Wirth (1935 – 2012), with significant participation from the Freundeskreis.
